The Department for Education seem confused about British values

A tweet in which the Department for Education appeared to distinguish between gay rights and "British values" was a "misunderstanding", a spokesperson has said.

Responding to stories that faith schools would teach students to be tolerant of other religions and respect LGBT rights, a tweet sent out on the department's official twitter read: "Nonsense to say schools 'must teach gay rights'. We want schools to teach broad curric [sic] based on British values."

Which prompted some questions...

And raised eyebrows...

A DfE spokesperson told i100.co.uk the tweet was a "misunderstanding" and that they had been referring to a headline in the Sunday Times which reads "Faith schools ‘must teach gay rights’". In a statement, they went on:

"It is complete nonsense to say that schools 'must teach gay rights'. Ofsted are rightly ensuring that schools do not indoctrinate pupils about gay people being inferior.

"The same goes for schools that do things like making girls sit separately. Both are practices which go directly against the fundamental British values of tolerance and respect.

"We believe schools should prepare all pupils for life in modern Britain. A broad and balanced curriculum is vital for this."
