Trump labelled a 'racist wannabe dictator' after claiming Biden will make Minnesota a 'refugee camp'

Trump was labelled a "racist wannabe dictator" after ranting about asylum seekers in Minnesota.

At a rally in Duluth, he said:

Another massive issue for Minnesota is the election of Joe Biden's plan to inundate your state with a historic flood of refugees. Biden and crazy Bernie Sanders ... they pledged a 700 per cent increase in refugees. 700 per cent.

700 per cent increase in refugees, coming from the most dangerous places in the world, including Yemen, Syria and your favourite country Somalia. Biden will turn Minnesota into a refugee camp, he said that! Overwhelming public resources, overcrowding schools and inundating your hospitals.

Unsurprisingly, Biden has not said that he would turn Minnesota into a "refugee camp", but he has pledged to increase the number of refugees the United States accepts. Biden set an annual target of 125,000 people, up from 18,000 under Trump – who reduced the numbers during his presidency by around 80 per cent.

Trump's racist scaremongering about refugees, from describing them as a "flood" to falsely blaming them for "overwhelming public resources" could not be more textbook. He was accused of attempting to "stir up hate" through his racist rant.

Elsewhere during his speech, Trump repeated his racist statements about Minnesota's congresswoman Ilhan Omar and fellow 'squad' member Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

He said:

And what about Omar, where she gets caught harvesting?

I've been reading these reports for two years about how corrupt and crooked she is. I mean, frankly, harvesting is terrible but it is the least of the things she has done. Then she tells us how to run our country, can you believe it? How the hell did Minnesota elect her? What the hell is wrong with you people?

It's time, and you know what, AOC, also. It's time. You take a look at what they do, the disgusting corruption.

Omar, who became a naturalised US citizen after fleeing civil war in Somalia, has responded to Trump's jibe about her nationality before.

The accusation that she is connected with vote harvesting in Minnesota was initially made by a right-wing activist group and found to be false by a fact-checker.

As well as attempting to stir up racial hatred, Trump has repeatedly falsely accused the Democrats of trying to rig the election. And as polling day draws ever closer, his tactics seem to be becoming more and more extreme – and more desperate.
