Since news of his death on Thursday night, tributes to Prince have been all over the internet.
One that’s been particularly prevalent is this anecdote about Eric Clapton:
When asked how it felt to be the world’s best guitarist, Clapton was said to have replied “I don’t know. Ask Prince”.
People have been quick to jump in and call this out as an urban myth, however.
Apparently it’s been applied to many artists over the years, usually with Jimi Hendrix talking up the talents of guitarist Rory Gallagher.
Surely Eric doesn’t really mind the suggestion though.
In a 1990 appearance on Desert Island Discs he chose “Purple Rain” as his favourite track.
