HBO faces backlash over Sex and the City revival

HBO has announced that it is bringing back comedy-drama television show Sex and the City for a new series.

The series following the lives of four women living in New York first aired in 1998 and ran for six seasons until the final episode 2004.

Two subsequent films have been made, but when it returns, it will be the first television episode to air in over 15 years.

The series will star Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis who’ll reprise their original roles. Meanwhile fan favourite character Samantha Jones, played by Kim Catrall, won’t be involved.

Production of the new series which will feature 10 half-hour episodes will begin in late spring and will continue, like the original, to be filmed in New York.

Despite being an international hit while on air, the show has since received criticism with claims that the 90s hit featured stereotypes and certain storylines contained racist and homophobic tropes.

With some saying the show has aged poorly, others are questioning whether the modern social landscape is the right time and place for the stories of “three rich white straight women” to be highlighted.

One Twitter user seemed to suggest the writing was indicative of society at the time which, thankfully, has moved on since then, writing:

“If you think Sex and the City was homophobic, sex-negative, and racist, boy do I have some bad news for you about the entirety of culture at that time”.

Perhaps some things are better left in the past?
