Stranger Things 5: The biggest Easter eggs from the final season to look out for

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Stranger Things 5, Volume 1.

Three years after the release of season four, it's finally time to put your phone on Do Not Disturb, log off social media, and lock in for Stranger Things season 5.

The epic conclusion sees an 18-month time jump to fall 1987, with all of our favourites returning to Hawkins, living under military quarantine.

Given that the Duffer Brothers already gave recommendations of episodes to rewatch before season 5, there were always going to be Easter eggs from previous seasons.

However, with the first five minutes of season five episode one transporting us all the way back to 12 November 1983 (otherwise known as six days after Will went missing), it becomes clear very quickly that the finale is going to be a whole dose of nostalgia - and finally joining the puzzle pieces together.

Already started watching? Here are some of the biggest easter eggs from Stranger Things 5 you may have missed...

1. The phone number you can actually call…

This was shared back in January ahead of Stranger Things 5’s release, but it appears again this season, and that’s the ‘missing teen’ poster featuring Jane Hopper, also known as Eleven.

If you call 765-303-2020, a voice replies: “Thank you for contacting the Hawkins Police Department. Due to the recent 7.4 magnitude earthquake, Hawkins is currently under lockdown.

“For the safety of our residents, the Hawkins Emergency Task Force is working closely with Hawkins PD to track down missing persons, of which Jane Hopper is a priority.

“We urge you as a responsible citizen of Hawkins to assist us as we search to locate her.”

Spooky, though it’s not the first time interactive phone numbers have been used in the show…

2. Back to the Future

There’s talk of flux capacitors this series from Robin and Joyce, and you’ll know exactly what that is if you’ve seen Back to the Future.

3. The First Shadow reference

For those of us who have headed to London’s West End or New York’s Broadway and seen the canonical Stranger Things play, The First Shadow, there’s a reference you’ll appreciate contained within Stranger Things 5.

Max is seen hiding in a cave in a desert this series, and with The First Shadow exploring the origins of Henry Creel aka One aka Vecna, we learn in the show that there was a period of time in which Creel vanished in the Nevada desert and was transported to Dimension X, where he came back different…

4. A Wrinkle in Time

Camazotz, referenced in the title for the upcoming sixth episode “Escape from Camazotz”, is taken from the 1962 science fantasy novel A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle, and Holly Wheeler names her imaginary friend ‘Mr Whatsit’ after Mrs Whatsit from the book.

And it gets more interesting when you consider the plot of the novel, which involves people disappearing (like Will and Holly), travelling between dimensions (hello, Dimension X and the Upside Down) and evil monsters (Vecna, obviously).

With three new episodes dropping at Christmas (25 December), before the grand finale on New Year's Eve (31 December), chances are there’ll be more easter eggs like these still to come…
