The US has earned its stripes as a beef-guzzling country it seems, after a UN report found it was only behind Luxembourg and Hong Kong when it came to meat consumption.

The average American consumes a whopping 126.6 kg of meat each year - compared to Ukranians who only eat around 38.6 kg. That's a lot of burgers.

The UK ranked 25th with the average person consuming 83.9 kg per year.

The latest global data publicly available comes from a UN report called The State of Food and Agriculture 2009, which reviewed livestock production and consumption around the world.

Meat consumption was especially prevalent in developed countries, largely in part due to the expense and demand.

Of the 175 countries, Bangladesh ate the least meat, with the average person consuming only 3.1 kg per year.

World Vegan Day was marked on 1 November, and was first established in 1994 by the UK's vegan society.
