There's an event to blow away the next hurricane using fans, and thousands are attending

Hurricane Irma is currently making its way across a string of Caribbean islands.

The category four hurricane is likely to strengthen in the next couple of days, according to the US National Hurricane Center.

Some people in the US have a rather ludicrous plan to cope with it.

A group on Facebook, titled "Everybody Points Their Fans At The Hurricane To Blow It Away" is gaining popularity. So far, 36,000 people have said they'll take part.

The group's page states:

Everyone takes their fans outside and points them at Hurricane Irma to blow it away from us.

Air compressors with a blow gun attachment also a plus, or anything else. Get creative.

Date/time subject to change due to the unpredictable path it may take.

*Not responsible for any collapsed lungs should you choose to blow manually.

Obviously it's a joke - the internet is trying to find a little sliver of humour in an otherwise dark and depressing situation... At least, that's what everyone is hoping anyway:
