Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnel has become the butt of a scathing newspaper Photoshop joke - with The New York Daily News depicting him as a fluffy white lapdog for Donald Trump.
Under the headline ‘Trump’s Lil Mitch’ and the subheadline ”Lapdog pol protects Don from riot prob” - the newspaper showcased McConnell as an adorable lap dog, curled up on the former president’s lap.
This was a response to McConnell’s resistance to ordering an investigation into the Capitol Hill riot that occurred on January 6, which many believe the former president incited.
Once Twitter spotted the newspaper cover, people didn’t hesitate to give their two cents, commenting on the loyalty McConnell and others have to Trump and why it makes sense.
Check out some of those responses below.
Another commenter pointed out how much they loved the paper for running the hilarious cover.
McConnell and House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy essentially worked to shut down a bipartisan bill that would establish the investigation of the violence that resulted in five deaths, including a Capitol Police officer.
On Wednesday, Reuters reported that The House voted to set up an independent commission on the violence with a vote of 252-175 which was similar to the panel that examined the September 11, 2001 attacks in the United States.
On the other hand, Senate Republicans, who were led by McConnell, didn’t cosign the investigation.
This wouldn’t be the first time McConnell has been turned into an animal for the cover of the New York paper.
In a January 2020 cover subheadlined, “Mitch refuses to budge on witnesses despite Bolton’s Ukraine bombshell,” McConnell was transformed into a chicken.
McConnell refused to allow witnesses to testify in Trump’s impeachment trial over the Ukraine transgressions. Former national security advisor John R. Bolton mentioned that Trump wanted to freeze $391 million in security assistance to Ukraine until officials investigated Democrats in his book, according to The New York Times.
