We all have dirty dreams every so often – even if you’re too uptight to admit it.

And like most dreams, they shouldn’t be taken purely on face value. This is your subconscious running wild, and what happens in a dream doesn’t mean what it does in the real world.

Basically, just because you have sex with someone in a dream, it doesn’t mean you want to have sex with that person in real life.

But what do they actually mean then? Ian Wallace is a dream psychologist, and writer of the book The Top 100 Dreams: The Dreams That We All Have and What They Really Mean. And he says:

All dreams, even sex dreams, can be easily connected to things going on in your life. And every character in your dream represents a small snippet of your own personality.

So let’s break that down and see what the most common sex dreams actually mean.

Sex with your boss

So, this does not literally mean that you want to bone your line manager, possibly on the photocopier. Well, maybe it does. But really, it’s a sign that you want take things further at work, and you think you are ready to take on more responsibility. Wallace says:

Sure, you may be sexually attracted to your boss. But if you’re having sex with him in a dream, your subconscious is probably becoming aware of your own ability to make decisions and act as a leader.

Sex with a friend

Don’t worry, this does not mean you want to cross a boundary and ruin your friendship. It means that they have a trait or a talent that you admire, and you want to develop in yourself.

Sex with a family member

This can obviously be pretty disturbing, but it is actually quite common and nothing to worry about. Wallace just says that like having a similar dream about a friend, it is just a sign that you admire them.

Cheating on your partner, or you being cheated on

This is not your latent psychic powers trying to let you know that you're actually being cheated on. But it is still not a good sign. According to Wallace:

When you dream that your partner is having an affair, it may mean that you’re losing faith in your own abilities or attractiveness.

Sex with your ex

This doesn’t necessarily mean that you want to get back together with your ex. But Wallace says if you are dreaming of them, it could be because you are the repeating bad habits that ended that relationship. So sort it out before it’s too late!

A celebrity

This is pretty obvious, right? You just fancy someone famous and beautiful, right? Actually, no. This is more about your psyche seeing that you have a trait or talent in common with that star.
