People trust a fictional dog to run the country more than Ed Miliband

For a man who has been likened to the plasticine character Wallace, whose trusty sidekick is the dog Gromit, this latest piece of electoral research is slightly unfortunate for Ed Miliband.

A new poll has shown that 35 per cent of Britons would trust Gromit to run the country compared to just seven per cent saying the same for the Labour leader.

The research, launched by biscuit brand PiCK UP! to coincide with Crufts, also found that aside from Gromit, 35 per cent would opt for another fictional dog - Lassie - while David Cameron (14 per cent), Nigel Farage (six per cent) and Nick Clegg (three per cent) were all left trailing behind.

Survey conducted via the TNS CAWI Omnibus “OnLineBus”. Data was collected online from 1,000 GB adults aged 16-64 on 10–12 February 2015.
