On Pornhub alone, 4.6 billion hours of online pornography was watched last year.

That's 12.5 videos per person on the planet.

Here's some perspective:

Regardless, researchers have found that not all porn viewers are made equal.

They fall into three categories:

  • Recreational - You watch roughly 24 minutes a week, you're probably a woman or in a relationship or both, and you probably don't go to that much effort to access porn.
  • Distressed - You watch an average of 17 minutes a week, you probably feel a little shame of self-disgust after watching porn and it causes you some stress.
  • Compulsive - You watch around 110 minutes a week, you're probably a man.

To gauge which of the profiles viewers in the study fitted with, researchers implemented surveys with statements such as:

I believe I am addicted to internet pornography.

And:

After viewing pornography online, I clear my browser’s history.

And:

I fear that someone might someday discover my secret viewing of online pornography.

The authors of the study commented:

The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis of distinct profiles of cyberpornography users using three dimensions of personal reactions toward viewing sexually explicit videos or images on the internet: Compulsivity, intensity of efforts to access pornography, and emotional distress associated with consumption.

Approximately 71.8 per cent of subjects were women and 28.2 per cent were men, while 81.8 per cent identified as heterosexual, 5.8 per cent were homosexual and 11.6 per cent were bisexual.

Seventy-five per cent of the study's participants were classified as recreational users, reporting higher sexual satisfaction and lower levels of sexual compulsivity and dysfunction.

Researchers said this group might:

Might promote an active and open sexuality or, at the very least, not compromise general sexual well-being.

For the remainder of participants, 12.7 per cent were deemed 'highly distressed non-compulsive' viewers and 11.8 per cent were designated compulsive, which:

Was characterised by high scores on compulsivity to pornography and intensity of efforts to access pornography and moderate scores on emotional distress associated with pornography use.
