The people of Los Angeles have been given some sage, if slightly offensive, advice by a road sign on one of the city's highways.

Posting the picture on Twitter, local journalist Daina Beth Solomon explained that the sign appeared at the interchange between South Hope Street and 4th Avenue in downtown.

A spokesperson for Traffic Management Incorporated - which is responsible for the running of the sign - told LA Weekly that the sign had been hacked and that whoever had hacked it had likely "had to physically break into the trailer-based sign".

So far, no one has come forward to claim responsibility.
