Your selfies may be revealing elements of your personality, according to a new study.

The study, published in Computers in Human Behaviour, found that as the selfie-taker controls the way in which they are depicted this can reveal clues as to the personality of the photographer.

The psychologists from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore and the Chinese Academy of Sciences tested the personalities of over 600 users of the microblogging site Sina Weibo, against their selfies.

The participants took a personality survey which measured the “big five” traits of openness, agreeableness, extroversion, conscientiousness and neuroticism.

Their results were compared against factors of their selfie profile pictures, including whether they pressed their lips together, whether they smiled (or displayed “emotional positivity”) and how much of their torso was in the selfie.

The results showed a correlation between certain selfie factors and personality traits, called “personality-related cues”.

Using these, can we guess what your selfie says about you? Take the quiz below:

The researchers found various cues linking to personalities.

For example, emotional positivity or smiling predicts agreeableness and openness, making a duckface indicates neuroticism, and featuring a private location in the background (such as a bedroom) indicates less conscientiousness.

Taking selfies alone also was related to neuroticism, whereas taking selfies with others was linked to being an extrovert.
