Uncut Gems will land on Netflix at the end of January, a rare Adam Sandler film worthy of your attention to rank alongside Punch-Drunk Love, The Meyerowitz Stories and Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation.

The Safdie brothers’ glorious follow-up to Good Time is a masterpiece of Jewry and jewellery, a devastating thrill ride through New York's diamond district that never lets up from first frame to last. Rarely can there have been a more anxiety-inducing couple of hours of entertainment but the picture is undoubtedly something special and almost certainly Sandler’s finest hour.

The actor is receiving plenty of plaudits for his performance as Howard Ratner and apparently praise has even come from a man generally considered one of the greatest living actors: Daniel Day-Lewis.

During an interview with Bill Simmons, Sandler explained that he has been friendly with the acting legend for years (possibly since both have starred in Paul Thomas Anderson films) and refers to the retired knight as “Danny”. He went on to say that he received the call while shopping at Macy’s:

“I’m getting my sneakers and then I look down at my phone and it’s Daniel Day-Lewis… He starts talking about grabbing the seat in front of him… It was the best call ever.”

It’s heartening to think that even the biggest stars have heroes and every so often those heroes prove they’re worthy of adulation. Hopefully Day-Lewis also has thoughts on Little Nicky, Sandler’s 2000 effort set in hell in which Adolf Hitler receives a painful punishment from behind on a daily basis involving a pineapple.

Uncut Gems is in select cinemas from 10 January and on Netflix from 31 January.
