Biden finally defeating Trump is reminding people of an iconic Star Wars moment

Joe Biden has won the 2020 presidential election.

Well, not officially speaking because some ballots are still being counted, but the major networks have all called the election for Joe Biden after he was projected to win Pennsylvania and Nevada.

Across the US, cars honked their horns and people descended to the streets en masse to celebrate the defeat of one of the most divisive and aggressive men American politics has ever seen.

With cheers and optimism, the scenes are very different four years ago, when Trump supporters and confederate flag wearers faced off with anti-Trump protesters after his shock 2016 win.

There’s lots of cinematic parallels that spring to mind from the jubilant scenes and the overriding feeling that good has triumphed.

And one in particular that people are noticing is with Star Wars.

The original trio of films, starring Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford and Mark Hamill, are a classic good-beats evil roller-coaster.

In the first film, A New Hope, the rebel alliance defeats the evil imperial empire. But in the second film, The Empire Strikes Back, the pendulum swings in the other direction and evil bites back. But in the final film of the original trio, Return of the Jedi, the rebels triumph once more. After they win, people party into the night across the galaxy.

This is reminding people of the huge step forward that Barack Obama’s election felt like in 2008, followed by what felt like the retribution with the election of Trump. Now, with Trump defeated by Biden, it feels like the story is complete.

On Twitter, lots of people pointed out the similarity.

As jubilant scenes continue, Biden is poised to address the nation as the president-elect for the first time.

With a huge task ahead of him, may the force be with him.
