Ash Wednesday is officially the first day of Lent, a period of religious observance in the Christian calendar that runs for 40 days until Easter Day.

During Lent, people traditionally give things up, whether that's chocolate, barn dancing, or video games, in the lead up to the remembrance of Christ's death on Good Friday and his resurrection on Easter.

One band, however, has decided to get a bit more political in its observance of the tradition, and have shared potentially the most depressing Brexit joke we've ever read.

Taking to Twitter, they wrote:

for lent i’m giving up the ability to live and work in 27 countries

Ouch.

Other people were quick to chime in with their thoughts.

Many people were quite simply pretty sad about the whole thing.

And said the whole thing cut pretty deep.

Wow, it really is depressing, isn't it.

Look on the bright side guys, you're all going to get snazzy new blue passports!
