Gudni Thorlacius Johannesson, the Icelandic president is “firmly opposed” to the idea of pineapple on pizza.

Such is his acrimony, at a high school visit he went so far as to suggest that he would ban pineapples on pizza if he could.

People took his words rather seriously.

This is real news you guys...

Some people were appalled:

And questioned how progressive Iceland really was...

Others were supportive of the president...

How can he seek to do something so despotic?

There was even a change.org campaign for his resignation over his “extreme views” (on the fruit and the pizza).

Calm down, he’s not banning pineapple on pizza.

In a statement, he clarified his position:

I like pineapples, just not on pizza. I do not have the power to make laws which forbid people to put pineapples on their pizza.

I am glad that I do not hold such power. Presidents should not have unlimited power.

I would not want to hold this position if I could pass laws forbidding that which I don't like.

I would not want to live in such a country.

For pizzas, I recommend seafood.

Welcome to news in 2017.

But seriously, seafood pizza?
