An Asian widow received a hateful letter on the day of her husband’s funeral, telling her to “go back to her country”.

The letter was sent to a Mrs Choi of Los Angeles by a fellow resident in the retirement home, Leisure Home.

It read: “Now that Byong [her husband] is gone it makes it one less Asian to put up with in Leisure World. You fricken Asians are taking over our American community! It is not resting well with all and everybody who lives here”.

“Watch out! Pack your bags and go back to your country.”

It comes after a shooting occurred in three Atlanta-area massage parlours last week, leaving eight people dead, including six Asian women.

President Joe Biden, in response, said he would combat hate crimes against the Asian American community.

Speaking to CBS Los Angeles, the widow’s daughter, Claudia Choi said the letter was “disgusting”.

She added: “Racism and hatred and cruelty needs to be denounced at every turn.

“It’s not just when somebody gets beaten up, although that’s terrible.

“But when your neighbour says something like they need to go home or makes an Asian joke, you need to speak up and say that is not okay because these little things that we allow to pass lead to bigger things.”

The identity of the Leisure World resident who sent the letter is not known. The care home said that if they find the sender, they will be expelled from the home.

A spokesperson added: “This malicious and egregious act of hate speech threatens our core values of racial equity and social justice.

“We condemn in the strongest possible terms such action.

“All actions will be taken to locate and prosecute the individual.”

The FBI also confirmed they would be investigating the issue.
