In January 2013, Donald Trump’s personal attorney, Michael Cohen, wrote a scathing letter to the satire news website The Onion.

According to The New Yorker, the attorney threatened legal action after they published an article titled ‘When You’re Feeling Low, Just Remember I’ll Be Dead In About 15 or 20 Years'.

The byline, along with a little square photo at the top, was Donald Trump.

Cohen began the letter by stating – because apparently it was necessary – that the comment piece was “not written by Mr Trump”.

He went on to criticise the article as a “disgusting piece that lacks any place in journalism”.

I am hereby demanding that you immediately remove this disgraceful piece from your website and issue an apology to Mr Trump.

Did The Onion, faced with the possibility of legal action, scramble to remove the piece?

No, of course not.

In fact, more than ever the piece reads like a salve on the wound that is Trump’s presidency.

Cole Bolton, the website’s editor-in-chief says not only is the article still up, but the publication didn’t apologise for it.

Prophetic statements include:

Now, I recognise that the news out there in the world has been particularly depressing lately, and these days it’s understandable that one might begin to feel like there’s no hope and no reason to go on, but let me assure you that there is.

And

And if my death in 15 or 20 years feels like it’s too far in the future to wash away your blues, you can take heart knowing that I’ll start to physically and mentally deteriorate well before then.
