A woman in the Bahamas has opened her home to 97 stray dogs to protect them from Hurricane Dorian.

Chella Phillips, who lives in Nassau on the island of New Providence, said she took in the animals as the storm approached the island over the weekend.

In a Facebook post, Phillips wrote:

97 dogs are inside my house and 79 of them are inside my master bedroom.

It has been insane since last night, poop and p*** non stop but at least they are respecting my bed and nobody has dared to jump in.

Although Nassau was not the worst hit area of the Bahamas, it still suffered flooding and power outages, according to media reports.

Phillips runs a Facebook page called “The Voiceless Dogs of Nassau, Bahamas” and helps homeless dogs throughout the year – funded by donations.

As of Tuesday afternoon, her fundraising page has raised more than $65,000 (£54,000).

And her extraordinary effort has been met with an outpouring of support from people around the world.

In her most recent message, Phillips said the dogs were alright after a “stressful night” of bad flooding.

She added:

I pray for the other islands who have unimaginable damages and I don't see how any dogs or any living being could have survived outside. My heart goes out to them.

Thank you for the outpouring support and heartfelt prayers from so many people that don't even know us.

Phillips is now asking for help with finding homes for the stray dogs.
