The folks over at Time compiled a few compelling facts and figures about fidelity, courtesy of science and psychology blogger Eric Barker.
Be warned - the below makes for pretty sorry reading:
Men are more likely to cheat if...
-
Their spouse is pregnant
-
The more financially dependent he is on his partner
-
But men who earn substantially more than their partners are also more predisposed to cheating
-
Men who are risk takers or have high sex-drives
-
Men are more likely to cheat with women younger than themselves
-
Overall, married men are as likely to cheat as experience a flight delay
And for women...
-
The more sexual partners she has had
-
Women who earn more than male partners
-
Women who are better educated than their partners
-
The lower her educational level overall, the more likely it is a woman will cheat
Both sexes
-
The deeper a man's voice, and the higher a woman's voice, the more likely they are to cheat
-
Power and confidence make both sexes more likely to cheat
-
On average, people are unfaithful for the first time after seven years of marriage
-
Half of extramarital partners are met at work
-
Women are much more likely to have affairs when they’re younger, and for men, the likelihood increases with age
Other factors
-
Fairly obviously, how emotionally and sexually satisfied you are in a relationship affects the chances of how likely it is you'll cheat
-
Some people just cheat because they're stressed, a report found
-
But saying that, 56 per cent of male cheaters still say their marriage is 'happy' or 'very happy', and 36 per cent of women
Some good news
...Around three quarters of marriages survive the male parter cheating, and around 65 per cent of marriages where it's the female being unfaithful.
