Mother reveals how white supremacists use social media to radicalise teenagers

A mum has taken to Twitter to outline how young white boys are being groomed by white supremacy groups online – and she’s urging parents to heed her warnings.

Mark Zuckerberg appeared to stumble his way through questions from Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez about white supremacists groups and appropriate fact-checking on the social media giant’s platform.

One of the most salient exchanges was about white supremacy, with Ocasio-Cortez asking him:

You would say that white supremacist tied publications meet a rigorous standard for fact-checking?

Zuckerberg turned his head away and stared ahead for a moment, appearing to look for some form of guidance, before he finally responded:

Congresswoman I would say that we're not the ones assessing that standard, the International Fact Checking Network is the one setting that standard.

Joanna Schroeder, writer, media critic and mum wants parents to “listen up.” Here’s why.

Schroeder posted the now-viral thread after asking one of her own kids if she could show them social media. During an interview CNN she said:

He was scrolling quickly, really quickly. It was so fast, and he slowed down, and I saw an image of Hitler and I stopped him, and I said, 'Wait, is that Hitler?'

I know my kids understand Hitler, but as I scrolled through his [social media] I saw more memes that joked about the Holocaust and joked about slavery.

I know that the people who bothered me and harassed me and made my life miserable for all these years are influencing my kids. These are my sweet gentle boys saying this stuff.

You'll hear this from your conservative uncle, and you may also hear this from a kid that's getting a lot of alt-right messaging online — that everyone's too sensitive today.

That is entryway kind of terminology. It's not racist. No, it's not. But it's often used against people who are calling out racism or sexism or homophobia.

She added:

I wanted parents to know. To pay attention, because this particular group of boys is being targeted and these parents have no idea.
