Hopes for Uncharted 5 have gone into overdrive following a social media post from the director of Lost Legacy.

There hasn't been a new Uncharted game since spin-off Lost Legacy, focusing on Chloe Frazer and Nadine Ross, released in 2017 by PlayStation studio Naughty Dog.

The last mainline entry was Uncharted 4: A Thief's End in 2016 which rounded off Nathan Drake's story arc.

Or so it seems...

That's because speculation about a potential new Uncharted game, perhaps even Uncharted 5, has gone into overdrive following a post from Naughty Dog's Shaun Escayg on Instagram.

The director, writer and animator posted an image of an old cannon in a setting that looks as though it's straight out of an Uncharted game with the caption: "Research..."

It's not completely clear what Escayg is researching but the nature of the image has sparked huge speculation Naughty Dog could be working on another Uncharted game.

After all, Naughty Dog head Neil Druckmann has said the studio is working on a second, unconfirmed game alongside Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet...

Escayg's post was spotted and posted in the GamingLeaksAndRumours Subreddit and gamers have been having their say online.

One said: "Uncharted 5: A Thief's Return."

A second commented: "I mean, it would make sense. He directed Lost Legacy and that was awesome."

"THANK GOD!" a third exclaimed. "I mean personally I was hoping they would get back to The Last of Us since it's been so long but Uncharted was my second hope."

A fourth mused: "It would be really cool if Nathan and Elena's daughter is the main character and it's more exploration / puzzle focused instead of mass murder and wise cracks lol."

And a fifth added: "I mean, the only game that makes sense is Lost Legacy 2. Bringing Drake for a major role would undermine Uncharted 4's ending big time (unless they have something crazy planned like a team up with Lara Croft or Indiana Jones, then yeah f*** the nostalgia. Gimme that). Cassie as a main character could work (her turning out exactly like her father, which is something the Drakes wanted to prevent from happening, could be a funny story) but at the same time we already have one woman who's an adventurer, looking for treasure."

A new Uncharted game is officially unconfirmed at the time of writing.
