Beto O'Rourke answered the first question of the Democractic debate in Spanish and it became an instant meme

Beto O'Rourke answered the first question of the Democractic debate in Spanish and it became an instant meme

Wednesday night marked the first Democratic debate ahead of the 2020 US election, where one lucky person will be tasked with toppling the Trump presidency.

Before all that, they have to impress the Democratic voters first and former Texas Rep. Beto O'Rourke set out his stall early by showcasing his impressive linguistic talents.

Halfway through his first answer the 46-year-old from El Paso, started to speak in Spanish and talk about the US economy and how it should work for everyone.

Speaking in Spanish he said:

We need to include every person in this economy’s success.

But if we want to do that, we need to include every person in our democracy.

Every voter needs representation and we need to listen to every voice.

It has been suggested that O'Rourke was attempting to appeal to the viewers who would have been watching on the Spanish language network Telemundo, who were broadcasting the debate.

However, the moment became iconic for more reasons than one, mostly because of the expression on Cory Booker and Elizabeth Warren's face when O'Rourke was talking which became an instant meme.

Cory Booker wasn't about to be upstaged though and also gave an answer in Spanish, proving that he isn't the only bi-linguist running for election and yes...there were more memes for that.

Judging that O'Rourke has gone viral for this little PR stunt it doesn't appear to have completely worked as many people have pointed out that he failed to answer the question in any language.
