There are 76.5 million cats in America despite what the 1986 animated film An American Tail would have you believe.

In fact the US is the most cat-obsessed country in the world. One in three households own a pet cat, with an average of 2.2 cats per cat-owning family.

According to data from World Atlas, China comes second to the United States (with 53 million cats), followed by Russia (12.75 million) and Brazil (12.5 million).
