A sheriff unreservedly fact-checked Donald Trump amid the chaos of Tuesday's debate, after the president said he had the support of the “Portland sheriff”.

While the “Portland sheriff” doesn’t actually exist, the sheriff of Multnomah County – which encompasses Portland – shot back almost immediately.

In a tweet that currently has more than 800,000 likes, Sheriff Mike Reese wrote: “In tonight’s presidential debate the President said the ‘Portland Sheriff’ supports him. As the Multnomah County Sheriff I have never supported Donald Trump and will never support him.”

The sheriff also joked that Trump’s false statement had shocked his family: “Trump has made my job a hell of a lot harder since he started talking about Portland, but I never thought he’d try to turn my wife against me!”

This came after Trump bragged about support from “almost every law enforcement group in the United States” after being asked why he would be the right person to deal with “race issues” across the country.

“I have Florida. I have Texas. I have Ohio. I have, excuse me, Portland - the sheriff just came out today, and he said, ‘I support President Trump,’” Trump said.

“I don’t think you have any law enforcement,” the president later said to Joe Biden tauntingly. “You can’t even say the word law enforcement because if you say those words, you’re gonna lose all of your radical left supporters.”

It seems that Trump specifically mentioned Portland as it has been the site continued of political unrest and protests due to the racial injustice and police brutality across the country.

As much as Trump loves to flout his love of "law and order”, not everyone is taken with it.
