Trump supporters are saying a senator threatened to kill the President

American Senator Kamala Harris has attracted criticism for a joke she made about Donald Trump.

The 53-year-old Democrat, who was elected to the Senate in 2016, appeared on The Ellen Show on Wednesday, where they discussed a variety of topics including her potential bid for Presidency.

However, one moment of the interview has stirred some controversy. It involved a question during a quick-fire Q & A session.

Ellen asked her: "If you had to be stuck in an elevator with either President Trump, Mike Pence or Jeff Sessions, who would it be?

To which Kamala replied, "Does one of us have to come out alive?" before bursting into laughter.

Not only did Harris make an amusing and flippant joke, she also didn't name who she would want to meet in the elevator.

Somehow the entire quote and moment got blown completely out of proportion by Trump supporters.

Firstly the Fox News reporter Sean Hannity labelled the comments as a "shocking new low" and then the wave of criticism of Harris arrived on Twitter.

Should Harris choose to run for President in 2020, expect this quote to be brought up time and time again.
