Gabourey Sidibe, who shot to fame after starring in Precious, has asked why Anna Kendrick’s career took off after an Oscar nomination but "seas did not part for her".

Sidibe’s career debut in Precious, back in 2009, won her nominations for the Golden Globe and for the Academy Award for Best Actress.

The same year, Anna Kendrick was nominated for her part in Up in the Air.

While neither of the young starlets came home with an award, Kendrick went on to star in numerous blockbuster hits. Some of her most successful movies include Pitch Perfect, Into the Woods and Trolls.

Sidibe, meanwhile, featured in a selection of successful TV shows: American Horror Story, Empire and The Big C.

While she was clearly getting work, she now wonders why the “seas did not part for her” as they did for Anna Kendrick.

In an interview with Collider, Sidibe said:

The Hollywood seas didn’t part for me in the same way that it might have for maybe Anna Kendrick who was nominated for the first time that year as well, who then went on to star in films and television and the whole thing.

She added:

The seas did not part that same way for me and I assume that there are a few factors that made that so, but I am still working 10 years later.

Sidibe did not expand on what those factors might be.

She continued:

I have agency. I am comfortable with who I am. I know my voice.

I know what I want to say to the world. I know what I want to give to the world and what I want to give to myself. I know my artistry.

Antebellum, a horror movie starring Sidibie, has just been released through video on demand in the US.

It also stars Janelle Monáe and follows a modern-day African American woman who has to escape from a slave plantation.
