Hero mother turns anti-gay graffiti into a message of love

A mother who woke up to find her garage door had been sprayed with homophobic graffiti painted over it with the best design.

Erin DeLong from Villas, New Jersey is the mother of Miranda and Emily, 17 and 14 respectively, who both identify as bisexual.

Upon seeing the graffiti on July 30, painted in the middle of the night, she affirmed the statement in the best possible way.

The original graffiti simply read:

I’m gay

Now the garage door bears a rainbow flag for pride, formed of a colour on each tile indentation, to let their daughters know "they have nothing to be ashamed of."

The Evolequals blog has called the design:

the largest rainbow flag image for miles around.

It has since been uploaded to the Stop Homophobia Facebook group and has gathered over 6,000 likes.

Erin captioned the image, uploaded on 3 August:

Someone decided to vandalize our house last week, in an attempt to shame/harass our two bisexual daughters.

We decided that some announcements deserve more than grey spray paint.

Erin said that at times the abuse her children have suffered has been difficult, but that the family support each other through positivity.

She told the Huffington Post:

We just try to let it roll off our backs. What they do says more about their character than ours.

It's great to have people tell us we are being great parents, but it would be even better if what we did was considered just normal parenting, and not amazing.

What an example to set.
