Netflix just unveiled the first trailer for its new "dark, twisted revenge comedy" Insatiable.
But the show, which stars Debby Ryan as Patty, has been rebuked by Twitter users, with many calling on Netflix to stop promoting the "toxic" and "fat-shaming" series.
In the trailer, Ryan can be seen donning fat suit as she recalls the hardship of being known as "Fatty Patty" in high school. But after having her jaw wired shut in order to lose a dramatic amount of weight, Patty plans to seek revenge by targeting those who teased her.
She says:
Having my jaw wired shut lost me more than just my summer vacation
Now, I could be the former fatty who turned into a brain. Or an athlete. Or a princess. No — I'd rather have revenge.
Twitter users instantly noticed that the narrative of someone transforming from fat and miserable to thin and sassy is problematic. Many are accusing the show of peddling stereotypes and equating thinness with success, happiness and desirability. It follows a long tradition of characters on the silver screen losing weight in order to become "popular" or "attractive."
