Some leaders commemorate the New Year with messages of hope and positivity, filled with love towards their people.
Maybe fireworks.
Barack Obama was very good at this, promising to be with Americans “every step of the way” this year.
Others, like Donald Trump, sent the Twitter equivalent of #HatersGonnaHate:
Of all world leaders, North Korean Kim Jong-un wins the 2017 edition of addresses.
You see, he forsook New Year’s well wishes and informed his people – and the world – that he might be test-launching an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM).
Because nothing says Happy New Year like nuclear weapons.
In a televised 30-minute New Year’s speech, he reportedly said:
Research and development of cutting edge arms equipment is actively progressing and ICBM rocket test launch preparation is in its last stage
Kim did not explicitly confirm that he will be testing the missile in January.
However, judge him by his actions this time last year. Pyongyang conducted a nuclear test 6 January 2016 – two days before the 'supreme leader’s' birthday.
An ICBM has a minimum range of 5,500km (3,418 miles), but some can go as far as 10,000km.
California is approximately 9,000km from North Korea.
However, in eight attempts last year, only once did the country manage to successfully deploy an intermediate-range Musudan ballistic missile, and experts have said they remain years away from developing one that could successfully carry a nuclear warhead to the US.
