While there is no such thing as a blueprint for a successful, long-term relationship, there are certain practices you and your significant other can adopt to take the relationship in that direction.
Relationship expert Tyler Leslie identifies five “non-negotiable” qualities of a lasting relationship:
1. Affection
Affection doesn’t necessary refer to physical, or even sexual actions.
This point is about demonstrating to your partner that you care about their wellbeing.
It can be a stroke of affection, or as simple as asking about their day.
2. Empathy
Linked to affection, the second important quality is about caring how your partner feels, and understanding their point of view.
By showing empathy, you’re fostering a deeper connection.
Often empathy is osmotic: making yourself emotionally vulnerable will often encourage your partner to do the same.
3. Integrity
Another vital element in a successful long-term relationship is trust: keeping your word, and following through creates a strong foundation of trust.
4. Openness
Leslie says it’s vital for your significant other to be aware of what you are thinking – this doesn’t mean all the time.
Rather, as soon as something negative arises, it’s best to talk to your partner about it rather than let it fester, which could lead to bigger problems in the future.
5. Understanding
This might seem like an obvious one: it’s important to be understanding of your partner’s point of view and their position on potentially controversial topics.
It’s also important to be in understanding about your views on relationships, and what you want out of the one you’re in.
