Starbucks lattes are approximately 25 per cent underfilled according to a lawsuit filed against the international coffee chain this month.

Siera Strumlauf and Benjamin Robles, from California brought a legal claim against Starbucks on behalf of customers, accusing bosses of violating state consumer laws and of "negligent misrepresentation and fraud".

The paperwork suggests that despite what its menu claims, a tall latte is not 12 fluid ounces, a grande latte is not 16 fluid ounces, and a venti latte is not 20 fluid ounces because baristas are under filling the cups.

By underfilling its lattes, thereby shortchanging its customers, Starbucks has saved countless millions of dollars in the cost of goods sold and was unjustly enriched by taking payment for more product than it delivers.

A spokesperson for Starbucks told BuzzFeed News the company was aware of the lawsuit and said it was "without merit".
