People from Glasgow have the sexiest accent in Britain, according to a survey of 1,000 Americans.

The accent won 23 per cent of the US vote, followed by the cockney accent, which pulled in 16 per cent.

British Airways surveyed 1,000 American and 1,000 British people on their opinions of regional accents, also finding that the Geordie accent was seen as the most intelligent by Americans, with 36 per cent of the vote.

Essex accents were seen as the least intelligent, backed by only 7 per cent of respondents.

British respondents found the New York accent the sexiest, with 25 per cent of the vote, whereas a Chicago accent was the least, fancied by only four per cent.

The survey also tested geographical knowledge, finding that British respondents had greater knowledge of US maps than vice versa.

Only 40 per cent of Americans could point to London on a map, while 73 per cent of British respondents could point to Texas.

Meanwhile, one in three Americans thought Bristol was in Northern Ireland.
