Flights, hotels, deck chairs, cocktails, sun cream... Travelling is just for the rich, right?

Not if you play the game right.

Forget everything you think you know about globe-trotting and get on the next flight to anywhere with these tips.

Work overseas

If the standard bar staff gig doesn't tickle your fancy, get creative.

House-sitting lets you stay in someone's house while they're away in exchange for keeping it safe and sound - you might even get to hang out with an adorable pet.

Or you can have a go at voluntourism (volunteer + tourism). A non-profit, trustworthy organisation that offers this is WWOOF, which stands for World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms; it lets you exchange your labour for a place to stay.

Fly for free

Yep, it is possible.

Sign up for a few travel credit cards, collect miles and soon you'll be jetting off for nothing at all.

It's also worth looking out for deals, such as 2-for-1 miles.

Don't forget to keep on top of those credit card payments though.

Surf couches by night and the sea by day. There are tonnes of services that connect locals who want to meet people and travellers who want free accommodation.

If Couchsurfing isn't your thing, sleeping in large dorms is your next best way to save money.

Ridesharing - check out BlaBlaCar - is another great way to save money on transport. Be careful, though: always keep your phone charged.

Enjoy living cheaply

Museums and walking tours can easily be done for free... And then you blow your entire budget on a nice restaurant anyway.

Cooking in your accommodation can both save you money and introduce you to new ingredients and recipes.
