A senior official for Donald Trump has bizarrely claimed that the president was sent by God.
Rick Perry, the US secretary of energy, was defending Trump on Fox News after he was mocked earlier this year for saying he was the “chosen one” to take on China.
The president later said he was joking with the comment.
However, Perry seems to have taken it more seriously and is now insisting that Trump was picked by God to save America.
He told Fox News:
God has used imperfect people all through history – King David wasn’t perfect, Saul wasn’t perfect, Solomon wasn’t perfect.
And I actually gave the president a little-one pager on those Old Testament kings about a month ago and I shared it with him.
I said, 'Mr. President, I know there are people that say you said you were the chosen one', and I said, 'You were.’
According to one Fox & Friends host, Perry said the same thing about Barack Obama when he was president – so he is consistently ridiculous at least.
Pete Hegseth, who is also a Fox & Friends host, followed Perry by doubling down on the claim and arguing that Trump’s supporters feel the same way about the president.
He added:
They hear the attacks from the media about who he is and his background, and they dismiss it and say God has used imperfect people forever because we’re all imperfect - but what he has withstood is unlike what really any other mortal could understand.
As you may have guessed, viewers watching on social media gave Perry’s assessment of Trump a strong thumbs-down.
For what it’s worth, Perry doesn’t have a reputation for being the smartest man in politics.
If you’re wondering why, here’s a clip from 2011 – when his presidential campaign went up in flames after he forgot which three government agencies he had pledged to eliminate to cut federal spending.
The gaffe was called “one of the most humiliating debate performances in recent US political history” at the time.
Although that didn’t stop him being picked for Trump’s cabinet…
