Donald Trump told supporters in West Virginia that he and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un 'fell in love.'

The president addressed a cheering crowd at a Saturday night rally, where he spoke fondly of the diplomatic relationship between the pair.

'He wrote me beautiful letters,' he began.

I was really being tough and so was he. And we would go back and forth. And then we fell in love. No really. He wrote me beautiful letters. They were great letters. And then we fell in love.

The US president's supporters laughed and clapped. Trump moaned about the fact that the media cast him as 'un-presidential'. He took the opportunity to make fun of them - one of his favourite pastimes.

The US president used a mocking 'news anchor' voice and said: 'Why has President Trump given up so much?'

'I didn't give up anything,' he threw back.

Trump and Kim have said they want to work towards denuclearising the Korean peninsula, and held a historic meeting earlier this year in Singapore to discuss it.
