An Indiana resident was arrested after leaving a racist note on the door of her new neighbour’s home.
The note specifically targeted the new residents’ son, claiming that they are moving into an “all white neighbourhood”.
63 year-old Deborah Cantwell was arrested after the note was reported to authorities. The home was also covered in toilet paper. The note read:
NO ****** wanted in this neighbourhood. THIS IS A WHITE NEIGHBORHOOD – some people find ******* stressful due to 33 years of NEGATIVE experience [sic] and it causes serious health issues.
Cantwell, who is now facing misdemeanour charges of intimidation and criminal mischief, admitted writing the letter and vandalising the property. She said:
I mean, blacks get away with it every time. Just rage, I was trying to vent.
She did not apologise and stated that she does intend to seek help from a counsellor.
I was just trying to let them know that they weren’t really … welcome as far as us. I just needed to let off some steam … I’m not a violent person so I didn’t think it was any big deal.
Since the incident, an online fundraiser set up by the family to pay for legal fees, a fence and security system has surpassed $2,100. On the page, the boy’s parents wrote:
I will forgive you one day, but for now you have instilled in all my heart, a fear I have never had before. You have instilled fear in my family, you have instilled fear [in] my children. This fear I have is crippling.
