David Bowie Spotify streams are up 3000%

On 11 January 2016 the world went into mourning as news of David Bowie's death broke.

The singer passed away following an 18-month battle with cancer. He was 69.

Streams of Bowie songs saw a 2822 per cent global increase on Spotify on Monday.

The five most popular Bowie tracks over the course of the day were:

1. Heroes (up 3630 per cent)

2. Let's Dance (up 3942 per cent)

3. Blackstar (up 1120 per cent)

4. Lazarus (up 1084 per cent)

5. Life On Mars (up 4238 per cent)

The data from Spotify - which was calculated by comparing streams from the previous two days - coincides with the most-played Bowie songs on UK radio this century.

According to music licensing company PPL, Let's Dance released in 1983 has enjoyed the most airtime. With 1981's Under Pressure and Starman (1972) coming in second and third.
