This weekend Fifty Shades of Grey broke the UK record for the biggest opening of an 18-rated film and enjoyed the biggest-ever Valentine's Day debut in America.

Sam Taylor-Johnson's adaptation of the best-selling book has also enjoyed the most lucrative box office opening of a film directed by a woman ever, according to an analysis by The Hollywood Reporter.

With opening weekend earnings topping $81m, Fifty Shades has overtaken animated films Frozen, Brave and Kung Fu Panda 2 (two of which were co-directed by men).
