Gillian Anderson's performance as Margaret Thatcher in The Crown is already being tipped for awards

The fourth season of The Crown has only been on Netflix for a few hours but people are already hailing Gillian Anderson's performance as Margaret Thatcher as awards-worthy.

The beloved actor, best known for her roles in The X-Files and Sex Education, is portraying the controversial and divisive British prime minister opposite OlivIa Colman's performance as Queen Elizabeth II in the latest season of the acclaimed show, this time set in the 1980s.

Anderson's casting as Thatcher left some torn and even 'sexually confused' as they loved the actor but feared that she may make them sympathise with Thatcher. However, when trailers for the season started to be released a few weeks ago people couldn't get over how accurate Anderson's voice was to that of the former prime minister, who died in 2013.

It would seem that it's not just the voice that people are impressed by, it's the entire package as those who have already started watching The Crown season 4 believe that Anderson is destined to win awards for the role.

If Anderson does win an award she'll be following in the footsteps of Meryl Streep who won the Academy Award for best actress in 2012 when she also played Thatcher in The Iron Lady.

There has also been widespread acclaim for Emma Corrin's performance as Princess Diana in The Crown's latest season, a marked improvement from other iterations of beloved royal that we have previously seen on screen.

You can watch season 4 of The Crown on Netflix now.
