Donald Trump is wading through a PR disaster which wasn't – for once – caused by him.

His wife Melania's speech at the GOP convention on Monday had won the hearts and minds of Republicans, but mere hours later turned out to feature a rather large chunk from Michelle Obama’s 2008 speech at the Democratic National Convention.

Awkward.

People on Twitter pounced on the news, and what followed was a sea of memes, gifs and parody...

Trump’s team quickly came to her aid but it was RNC chief strategist Sean Spicer, speaking to CNN, who really made an impression, citing My Little Pony as a defence among others...

In which Twilight Sparkle is an actual source of reference

Melania Trump said, 'the strength of your dreams and willingness to work for them.' Twilight Sparkle from 'My Little Pony' said, 'This is your dream. Anything you can do in your dreams, you can do now.'

Spicer also cited lyrics by Kid Rock and John Legend:

Melania Trump said 'you work hard for what you get in life.' John Legend said 'work hard to be anything you want in life.'

Except John Legend wasn’t having it...

Trolling the Trump camp, he used the exact words Taylor Swift had earlier said to Kanye West and Kim Kardashian following the Famous drama...

More: Jon Stewart came out of retirement to try and make sense of Donald Trump's Republican candidacy
