It’s been a frustrating time for movies.
Cinemas are closed again thanks to the new lockdown, the Netflix queue is probably dwindling down, and now we’re officially having a year without Ryan Reynolds.
Disney announced yesterday that it has indefinitely postponed the release of Reynolds' latest film, Free Guy, as well as the Murder on the Orient Express sequel, Death on the Nile.
Helmed by Night at the Museum director Shawn Levy, Free Guy follows a bank teller who realises that he is a background character in a video game that its developers are planning to shut down. Jodie Comer, Joe Keery and Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi also star in the film.
Free Guy was originally scheduled for 3 July, then the release was pushed to 11 December. Since the film has been pulled from Disney’s calendar entirely, its 2021 release date is up in the air.
Fans were devastated by the news.

Blockbusters have taken quite the hit this year, unsurprisingly. Disney’s release calendar for the remainder of 2020 is almost empty, following the delays of Black Widow, West Side Story and The French Dispatch among others.
That leaves Wonder Woman 1984 as the only major blockbuster with a 2020 release. Meanwhile, the only film left on Disney’s calendar is Oscar hopeful Nomadland, starring Frances McDormand.
In this unconventional year, a streaming release might not be out of the question if cinemas stay closed. This summer, Disney defied all expectations by moving Mulan to Disney+. Pixar’s latest, Soul, is also set to skip cinemas and open on the streaming platform on Christmas Day.
Still, if you’re absolutely desperate for your Ryan Reynolds fix, you can hear his voice in the animated film, Croods: A New Age, which is set to be released this month.
You can’t know for certain anymore though, so fingers crossed.
