Sarah Hyland is taking time off social media after receiving criticism for sharing a GoFundMe for her cousin’s funeral.

The actress posted a link to the fundraising page collecting donations for funeral expenses after her 14-year-old cousin, Trevor Canaday, was killed in a car accident caused by a drunk driver.

The page has raised over its $40,000 (£31,370) amount, with 902 people donating to raise $42,542 (£33,364) in three days.

Hyland donated $1,000 (£784) towards her cousin’s funeral.

Twitter users sent their condolences, but some people questioned why she was asking for money rather than paying for it herself, given her elevated financial status. According to Celebritynetworth, Hyland is worth $9 million (£7,060,000).

Others came to her defence, arguing that the Modern Family actress hadn't created the GoFundMe page, and that she was using her platform to help her family.

Hyland had enough of the criticism, and in follow-up tweets expressed her intention to take a break from social media.

'You guys finally did it. Your horrible negative ignorant words have broken me. Happy? Staying offline for a while. I have a special announcement and video releasing on Wednesday I believe. So. There’s that.'

People took to Twitter to send her a barrage of support, and asked others to let her grieve.
