7 episodes of Friends that would be ruined by modern technology

Feeling nostalgic about Friends ahead of the 20th anniversary? So are we. But that doesn't mean we didn't find it harder to suspend our disbelief during these episodes.

1. The One with the Mix Tape

Remember when Chandler and Monica agreed to hand make their Valentine’s gifts to one another, prompting last minute panic from Chandler? He dug out an old mix tape that his ex-girlfriend Janice made for him, and personalised. Cue awkward.

In 2014 Chandler would definitely not be caught out with a personalised mix tape. Or a tape at all. Think Spotify.

2. The One with the Embryos

Yes, that episode where no one knows what Chandler's job is simply unfathomable in the age of Twitter and LinkedIn. Surely Rachel or Monica would just google Chandler and find he is an executive specialising in statistical analysis and data reconfiguration.

3. The One with the Blackout

Chandler getting stuck in an ATM vestibule with Jill Goodacre played a key part here. But when was the last time you found it hard to pay with a card - or saw an ATM vestibule?

4. The One without the Ski Trip

The gang get stranded on the way to Rachel's sister's cabin for a ski trip. Nowadays they would have been able to use a break-down app, GPS and 3 or 4G to get help from someone other than Ross.

5. The One with the Ick Factor

In this episode, which dates from 1995, Ross gets a pager to alert him for when his ex-wife Carol goes into Labour and deals with the outcome of several false alarms. Fast forward two decades and Ross would have his mobile on loud in the days around Carol’s due date, possibly with a personalised ringtone for her or Susan.

6. The One with the Sharks

Monica thinks Chandler is sexually attracted to sharks after he quickly switches the channel to prevent her catching him watching porn on TV in his hotel room. If it happened today? Chandler would have just snapped his laptop shut.

7. The One where Ross Finds Out

Ross finds out about Rachel's feelings for him after hearing a drunken message she left the night before on her answer-phone machine. Fast forward two decades and Ross would have found out hours before, thanks to a string of drunken texts.
