The greatest piece of art ever made

YouGov asked the people of Britain to vote for the greatest work of art ever made - with Michelangelo's painted ceiling at the Sistine Chapel (above) in the Vatican City coming out in top spot by quite some margin.

Here's the top 15:

1. Sistine Chapel ceiling (Michelangelo) - 25 (per cent)

2. Mona Lisa (Da Vinci) - 7

3. The Last Supper (Da Vinci) - 5

4. Water Lilies (Monet) - 4

5. The Hay Wain (Constable) - 3

6. Starry Night (Van Gogh) - 3

7. David (Michelangelo) - 2

8. Sunflowers (Van Gogh) - 2

9. Guernica (Picasso) - 2

10. The Fighting Temeraire (Turner) - 2

11. The Kiss (Rodin) - 2

12. Elgin Marbles/Parthenon - 2

13. Christ of Saint John and the Cross (Dali) - 1

14. Pieta (Michelangelo) - 1

15. The Thinker (Rodin) - 1

None of the above - 10

Don't know - 28

The polling company used two stages to reveal their findings. The first phase was to ask people the open-ended question: “In your opinion, what is the greatest work of art ever made?”

Secondly, they gathered the top 15 responses and asked people to choose their favourite from that list. In both instances, the Sistine Chapel was chosen as the number one piece.
