Vince Vaughn has clarified his political views after receiving backlash for shaking Donald Trump’s hand.

In January this year, the actor was spotted shaking hands and talking to Trump at a football game in New Orleans.

In a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times, the actor responded to some of the backlash he received, explaining his actions.

In my career I’ve met a lot of politicians who I’ve always been cordial to; I’ve met Nancy Pelosi and was cordial to her as well.

Most loved for his roles in Wedding Crashers and Dodgeball, Vaughn is very much a household name.

As someone in the public eye, his meeting with Trump caused a lot of controversy and speculation about his political beliefs.

Some Twitter users took it as a sign that Vaughn is a supporter of Trump, saying they were ‘unsurprised’. Others even called for people to boycott his new horror-comedy movie Freaky.

To be clear, Vaughn has never stated that he votes for Trump and this is purely baseless speculation.

Meanwhile, others were quick to defend the star, praising him for not letting political beliefs get in the way of behaving cordially towards the president, while also having a pop at so-called ‘outrage culture’.

Vaughn claims he “raised with the idea that you could have different likes and beliefs and you should respect and defend that in other people, not shout it down. The people you disagree with the most, you should stand up for their right to do that.”

The actor went on to suggest the outrage is coming from a minority of people who are extremely passionate and engaged in politics.

I think people are more charged than ever about these things

But I don’t think most people take that stuff as seriously as the small percentage that’s making noise about it.

Well that clears that up then.
