Starstruck opponent asks Lionel Messi for a selfie... on the pitch

While football players traditionally exchange shirts at the end of a match, Jamaican international Deshorn Brown took things to a new, 21st century level on Saturday night.

At the end of his nation's 1-0 Copa America defeat against Argentina, the forward grabbed his smartphone, walked up to Lionel Messi and asked for a selfie.

He surprised me. On top of that I was annoyed about how the match had gone despite our win. But when I saw the phone I realised what was going on. It’s really nice when a colleague asks me for that.

Brown explained that he'd prepared to take the photo before the match, leaving his phone on the substitutes bench so he could grab it at the final whistle.

“Messi is the best in the world, a star, and that’s a photo I’ll have as a souvenir all my life,” he told reporters after the game in Vina del Mar, Chile.
