A bizarre and unlikely spat has broken out on Twitter between US senator Bernie Sanders and the billionaire owner of SpaceX and Tesla, Elon Musk.

The war of words between the two grown men, who should really know that Twitter isn’t the best place to have intelligent debates, started back on 18th March when the staunchly left-wing Senator from Vermont tweeted that both Musk and the owner of Amazon have more combined wealth between them than the bottom 40 per cent of the US population.

Sanders added: “That level of greed and inequality is not only immoral. It is unsustainable.”

It’s certainly a punchy statement from Sanders but nothing uncommon as socialists have long been calling for the world’s richest people to give back some of the vast amounts of wealth that they have accumulated over their careers.

A few days later a website called Clean Technica pointed out how this attack from Sanders on Musk was ridiculous. The South African replied to a tweet about the story claiming that he is “accumulating resources to help make life multi-planetary & extend the light of consciousness to the stars.”

Sanders then replied to this and, although he conceded that space is an ‘exciting idea’ down here on Earth, he said that we need a “progressive tax system so that children don’t go hungry, people are not homeless and all Americans have healthcare” before adding “the level of inequality in America is obscene and a threat to our democracy.”

Either man is yet to say anything else on this matter, however, our favourite tweet from this whole thing came from former Democratic presidential candidate Marianne Williamson who rose to prominence during the 2019 primaries for her unique approach to politics.

At the time of writing, Musk has a net worth of $196 billion.
