The ongoing joke, as tiring as the event of the year, is that 2016 has been an annus horribilis.
Cast your minds back to May - and David Cameron, Matteo Renzi, François Hollande, Barack Obama and Angela Merkel were still enjoying stability in power.

Fast forward to December and see how the situation has changed.
- David Cameron resigned following the EU referendum, replaced by Theresa May.
- Matteo Renzi offered the Italian president his resignation as Prime Minister. He is expected to stand down when the senate passes a 2017 budget.
- François Hollande is the outgoing president of France at the elections next April. He announced that he will not run for a second term earlier this month amid terrible opinion poll ratings.
- Barack Obama will leave office in January to be replaced by Donald Trump.
- Angela Merkel is seeking a fourth term as chancellor in next year's elections.
